Most commonly, this means PBXs, from small systems used by SMEs through to very large ones deployed across multinationals. Engineers with skills in PBX, contact centres, dealerboards and associated systems are recruited by a huge range of resellers, consultancies, managed service providers and end users (usually the larger ones.) Although support, implementation and maintenance roles are the most frequently available, in common with other services or project based jobs, opportunities exist for Project Managers, Service Managers, Technical Designers within the Business Telephony area.
Nearly all telephony jobs will bring you in contact with customers, so communication skills are important. Support roles will vary in their technical complexity from first-line, helpdesk support through to very hands-on third line engineering.
Highly prized vendor accreditations for telephony jobs
Formal, vendor-backed training is strongly preferred by employers looking to employ people with Business Telephony skills. This ranges from introductory courses on installing and supporting PBXs through to sought-after technical accreditations like ACS, ACE (Avaya) and CCVP (Cisco).
Telephony is always viewed by companies as being business-critical so there will always be demand for people who can support and maintain systems, especially those with deep knowledge of a particular technology.
Support jobs tend to be on a helpdesk or entry-level engineering roles. Engineers of small PBX systems will typically receive a company car or van for field-based roles. Experts in larger PBXs command the highest salaries as do technical specialists working on larger systems.
