OSS (Operational Support Systems) and BSS (Business Support Systems) are the software applications that help Telecoms companies manage their networks and interact with their customers.
OSS/BSS jobs align to other types of software in the ICT industry but tend to require experience within Telecoms. Analysis, Design, Development, Testing, Support, Consulting, Implementation and Project Management all exist in OSS and BSS.
Core technical skills for OSS/BSS jobs
The platforms and programming technologies in making OSS and BSS tend to be the same as in other spheres of ICT. Key skills including programming languages (Java, C# etc), databases (Oracle, SQL Server) and operating systems (Windows, Unix). In addition however, Telecoms companies tend to want people to have experience in the sector so they have exposure to the scale of project and complexity of integration that are often inherent.
There is also a wide variety of vendors in the OSS/BSS sector. Examples include Amdocs, Convergys, Subex and Siebel. These vendors also recruit developers, architects, support teams as well as people for the Professional Services organisations (Consultants, Proejct Managers etc) and staff in their Sales, Marketing and Product Management functions.
OSS/BSS jobs - the advantages of having relevant qualifcations
Formal training and accreditation in particular programming languages, databases or software packages will stand prospective candidates in good stead. For those in analysis and design, knowledge of structured methodologies is of benefit and the same applies for those in Project Management. For certain areas in BSS (financial areas like billing for example) accounting qualifications may also be an advantage.
