Projects range from deployment of telecoms infrastructure (eg cabling, fibre, wireless) or systems (eg PBX, contact centre, trading floor) to the development of telecoms-specific software (eg OSS, BSS, IVR) and the development of carrier-class networks.
For deployment projects, employers often want programme managers who have experience of a particular technology, eg PBX, or even a particular vendor’s technology, eg Avaya, Nortel. Many programme management jobsin Telecoms require a high-level technical understanding of the subject matter, hence many Telecoms PMs come from an engineering background.
Larger companies in Telecoms eg carriers, often want someone from the industry as there are few other industries where the scale and complexity of projects is equivalent. As with all telecoms programme management jobs, opportunities tend to be customer-facing and require the ability to manage stakeholders (internal and external) at all levels.
Knowledge of frameworks for telecoms programme management jobs
A structured approach to programme management is usually expected, and knowledge of (and accreditation in) a recognised programme ,anagement methodology such as MSP is often desired. Knowledge of frameworks specific to the Telecoms industry, eg eTom, can often be an advantage.
