Qualified Accountants in Scotland turning to interim work

Hays Senior Finance reports an increasing number of qualified accountants in Scotland are considering interim management as a valid career path. 2008 shows a 10% increase on interim registrations in Scotland and client demand is also high.

‘Qualified accountants are now considering interim management as a valid career path in its own right.’ says Keith Mason, Regional Director at Hays senior Finance in Scotland. ‘We are seeing more and more qualified accountants come to us inquiring about temp roles as a long-term career rather than a stepping stone, or a way of filling the gaps.’

‘These professionals are prepared to cast a wider net than the majority of finance professionals in permanent roles. They want to secure the best roles and are prepared to take international assignments if the right job comes along. Interim finance professionals can now demand salaries as much as 50% higher than their permanent counterparts - or more -depending on skill and expertise on offer. We recently placed a £35k candidate in an interim role that paid £60k per annum in comparison.

‘Interim managers have past experience of comparable challenges to the ones they are about to face, enabling them to add value from day one – reducing the risks, and guaranteeing success.’ Says Mason. ‘Interim managers have been met and referenced, enabling them to be in place in a matter of hours as opposed to months.’

Graeme Roberts, Interim Project Manager at RBS placed by Hays Senior Finance comments: ‘Interim working has exposed me to a variety of roles for a number of very high profile clients.   This exposure has significantly accelerated my career progression and has furnished me with a professional network I would have been unlikely to amass had I remained in the permanent market.’

Peter Keller, Specialist Consultant at Hays International comments: 'temping internationally appeals to people who want to gain international exposure and benefit from a better work-life balance. Candidates moving to a European country can benefit from the strong Euro and lower tax rates.'
