Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust is a 679 bed Trust based in Chelmsford, Essex and provides acute hospital based care to people who live in and around the towns of Chelmsford, Braintree, Maldon and Witham. The Trust serves a catchment population of 360,000, which is steadily increasing.
The Trust is also home to the internationally-renowned St Andrews regional plastic surgery service, covering a population of 3.2 million, and a regional burns service serving a population of 9.8 million and has an annual turnover of £190m, employing just over 3,000 staff across all of the hospital sites.
In 2004 the Trust was awarded Associated Teaching Hospital status from Barts and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry. This recognises the important work the Trust does in training junior doctors and the support offered to them by the Trust’s staff.
The organisation currently operates from six sites and manages Broomfield and St John’s hospitals in Chelmsford. The Trust also provide services at St Peter’s Hospital in Maldon, St Michael’s and the William Julien Courtauld Hospitals in Braintree, which are all managed by the Mid Essex PCT. Services are also provided at the Chelmsford and Essex Centre in Chelmsford.Mid Essex provides a wide range of services including: A&E; emergency medicine and surgery; elective surgery in most specialties; and maternity and paediatric services.
These are supported by a full range of diagnostic services and also specialist medical services such as diabetes, neurology, dermatology and rheumatology.
The Trust operates within the geographical area covered by the NHS East of England Strategic Health Authority and is within the area covered by the Mid Essex PCT.
