electrical jobs
The Electrical Engineering industry in the Utilities sector predominantly covers two fields in which an aspiring engineer can move into: Electrical Design, which comprises all the 'behind the scences' work, and Electrical Commissioning and Installation, which is the actual build stage of the project.
Those who venture into Electrical Design generally have an Electrical Engineering degree or an MSc. These candidates have a microscopic attention to detail as mistakes early on in the project lead to delays further down the process and cost valuable time and money.
Apprenticeships and training for electrical jobs
Electrical commissioning/installation engineers will commonly have an apprenticeship, coupled with recent training in the 16th or 17th Edition of Electrical Engineering training. Those candidate who hold a BSc Electrical Engineering or an HNC/HNO in Electrical Engineering but prefer to be outdoors and watch projects being commissioned in front of them also make excellent candidates.
Site based Engineers tend to have experience in installing PLC and SCADA systems which control the automated processes on site. With those candidates who have the ability to write and develop codes for PLCs and SCADA systems are more highly sought after.
Superb opportunities to progess your career in electrical jobs
Developments from both fields are endless and well structured. Electrical design engineers can expect to be involved in projects ranging from £20k through to £2m. Most design consultancies offer structured career paths that go from Graduate to Principal Electrical Engineer.
Electrical Commissioning Engineers enjoy the same career path structure, starting off as apprentices and progressing to Project Manager or Commissioning Manager levels and above.
