Estimators work with the business development, commercial and design teams to produce accurate, competitive and profitable tenders for new business.

Estimating jobs involve logging all new tender enquiries, producing outline estimates, bid responses and detailed estimates from take-offs. You will need to advise the design team on any profitable alterations and compile and co-ordinate financial aspect/market information and intelligence associated with the winning and development of accounts

Use your knowledge to advance your estimating career

You may have to assist the BDM by monitoring sales activity and generally advising on trends and improvements /alterations necessary to achieve budget as well as coordinating and assisting sales presentations. Performance will be primarily judged on quality of tender returns and percentage of tender wins.

There are no formal qualifications for estimating jobs. People come from a trades, project management or surveying background and should have good technical knowledge to understand drawings and advise on different products. 'Hands-on' knowledge is particularly sought after as they not only price the hardware, overheads, contingency and profit margin but also the man hours for installation.

Competition leads to demand for estimating jobs

The demand for estimators is strong, especially gvien the growth potential of many companies. Smaller contractors will often have Project Managers do all estimating but as they expand need a dedicated estimator. With companies competing for business, successful estimators are in high demand.
